Setting the standard in carbon reduction
21 February 2025
Scottish Water’s work on investment in carbon reduction has been recognised by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
The utility has been awarded the PAS 2080, a globally recognised standard that demonstrates leadership in carbon management and reduction in its investment programme.
Scottish Water is the first public organisation in Scotland – and one of the first Scottish businesses - to achieve this standard.
Gordon Reid, Scottish Water’s General Manager Bioresources Projects, said: “This achievement signifies the incredible progress we’ve made since launching our Beyond Net Zero routemap in 2020 and our goal to reduce emissions from our £1b per annum investment programme.
“Applying this standard across the investment programme will allow us to be bolder, go further and faster to reduce our emissions.”
Ian Watt, Scottish Water’s Beyond Net Zero Delivery Manager, added: “PAS 2080 is a globally acknowledged standard that helps organisations embed carbon reduction across their asset base. It’s critical that we reduce carbon from planning through to delivery while ensuring great value for public money.
“We’re already doing great work to reduce emissions. Obtaining this standard demonstrates that we are on the right track - it gives us a framework to deliver further emission reductions. We want to ensure that every project takes action to reduce emissions.”
Scottish Water’s latest The Net Zero Emissions Routemap annual update highlights the breadth of work being undertaken to keep the company on track to meet its 2040 targets. To date, the utility has halved its carbon emissions (from its2007 baseline) and is on track to deliver net zero by 2040 across its investment and operational emissions.
