A8 Greenock Flood Alleviation Investment
Project Overview
Scottish Water has invested £2.5 million in a project to address regular flooding of the A8 through Greenock.
We have installed a new screened Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) beneath Inverclyde Council's Pottery Street depot and upgraded the local sewer network.
Work started on the CSO in early January 2023 and the project completed in February 2024.

A8 Greenock Flood Alleviation Project
The A8 East Hamilton Street is the main route into Greenock from the east
What We Are Doing
We have installed a new screened Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) under land occupied by Inverclyde Council's Pottery Street Roads Depot.
This will increase capacity of the local sewer network during periods of heavy rainfall and when necessary allow screened waste water to discharge into the Lady Burn rather than flood the road.
Once the new CSO was constructed, work moved onto the A8 - East Hamilton Street - to upgrade and connect new sewer pipes. A system of contraflows were used to minimise delays.
This work was delivered by our alliance partner Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) on our behalf.

Why We Are Doing It
The A8 East Hamilton Street is prone to regular flooding during periods of extreme weather affecting commuters, road users, local businesses and the local economy.
We have invested £2.5million on a project that should dramatically reduce the chance of the road flooding.

Update February 2024
The main project moved out onto the carriageway in June 2023 where a series of phased contraflows - eastbound, westbound and single lane in each direction - allowed the diversion of existing utilities and connection of the new screened CSO to the upgraded sewer network.
Nearly 100 metres of the existing pipework has also been relined and upgraded - effectively a new pipe installed inside the old.
This final phase of the project has now been completed and the road restored to two lanes in each direction.
