Water Efficiency in the Garden

Our Top Tips

Water use in the garden accounts for 7% of your total water use. In summer this can rise to over 50%. Follow this simple advice to save water use in the garden

Hosepipes

Hosepipes use approx. 10 litres of water per minute!

  • Use a watering can instead, it’s more accurate
  • Water early in the morning or late in the evening; less water will evaporate and more will go to the plant roots
  • Fit your hosepipe with a trigger nozzle so it only runs when you need it
  • Use a bucket and sponge instead to wash your car

Rain Water

Collect rain water in a water butt.

  • A standard water butt can collect approx. 5,000 litres of rain water per year
  • Plants prefer rain water
  • Your roof collects tens of thousands of litres of rainwater every year

More Water Tips

Garden sprinklers use approx. 15L/min. It uses as much in one hour as the average person uses in a WEEK.

  • Don't waste water on paths and patios - if it doesn't grow, don't water it!
  • Use a brush to clean paths, patios and driveways, not a hose
  • Insulate exposed water pipes to prevent them freezing and bursting
  • Shut off the supply to an outside tap and drain it, if possible
  • Check outside taps for drips and replace worn washers
  • Know where your stop valve is, in case of a burst' it’s usually under the sink, on the hall, bathroom or garage
