Storm Tank Takes Shape
We are building a new underground storm water storage tank capable of holding nearly a million litres of water
At this location:
We are relocating an existing storm overflow and building a new underground storm water storage tank.
Capable of holding nearly a million litres of water, storm flows will be redirected from overloaded sewers into the tank and stored until the weather subsides. The storm water will then be pumped back into the sewer network to flow to the waste water treatment works.
The project is part of our £500million Improving Urban Waters investment programme.

A new outfall is also being constructed

The site compound has been set up on Barbours Park
The overflow will safely divert storm rainwater run-off during extreme weather to prevent the sewers backing up into homes and businesses. Discharges will only happen when the now-increased sewer reaches capacity and will be screened to protect the environment.
Work to relocate the overflow and build the new storage tank in Barbours Park began on the 3rd of February, 2025 when the entire park was closed to the public to ensure the safety of both the community and our workers.
As well as the tank, new sewers have been installed along a short section of Bridgend to channel flows into the new tank. Stored water will eventually be pumped back into the sewer network and directed to the waste water treatment works.
We appreciate this work may cause some inconvenience. We are committed to working closely with the community to minimise disruption and make the process as smooth as possible.

A new upgraded surface water sewer has already been installed

Excess surface water will drain into the nearby Annick Water
Update September 2025
From Monday 22 September 2025 the B778 Holm Street will be closed at the junction with Bridgend for approximately two weeks.
This is to allow our utility partners SGN and SPEN to safely divert other existing utilities to allow the installation of our new storm tank and overflow at nearby Barbours Park.
The work and traffic management will be carried out and managed by SGN, and anyone with enquiries should contact them on 0800 912 1700.
We appreciate this is one of the main routes into the town, particularly from the M77 and Glasgow but the closure is necessary for the work to be carried out safely.
Diversions will be in place – including an alternative route for heavy goods vehicles – and drivers will be advised to allow extra time for their journeys.

Two Week Closure
