Benbecula Water Main Upgrades
Project Overview
We are investing £2.5million to replace 11km of water pipes on the Island of Benbecula. This investment represents a vital step towards ensuring a reliable and high-quality water supply for the island’s community for many years to come.
Work began in January 2024 with the whole project expected to take approximately 15 months to complete.
The project is being delivered by our alliance partner Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) and local contractor MacInnes Bros.

Why Are We Doing This?
We are taking care of the water services in Benbecula to ensure the local community can continue to enjoy clear, fresh drinking water, while reducing the chance of pipes bursting in this area.
Replacing the ageing infrastructure will secure a more sustainable water network, safeguarding the reliability and quality of the water for generations to come.

Latest Update - December 2024
Work is currently underway along the scenic South Ford Causeway, which connects Benbecula to South Uist, as well as on rural land and road verges beside the A865.
Roadworks, including the use of temporary traffic lights and some access restrictions, will be in place while this project is carried out. Advance signage will be in place prior to any work on the roads commencing.
We thank our customers for their patience and understanding while we carry out this essential upgrade work.
Community Engagement
We are keen to continue working with the community. Our site team consists entirely of local workers from South and North Uist. This community-focused approach ensures local expertise is central to the project while supporting the island's economy.
We also attended Balivanich Primary School to deliver a presentation about the water cycle to the pupils.
