We are carrying out a significant investment to improve the resilience and quality of the water supply in North Ayrshire following a spate of recent bursts.
Nearly two miles of new pipework will be installed along the route of the A78 between Wemyss Bay and Skelmorlie.

What We Are Doing
We are investing approximately £2million to install a new water main between Wemyss Bay and Skelmorlie along the route of the main coast road, the A78.
Starting from just south of Wemyss Bay the work will be carried out under rolling traffic management reducing the road to one lane for approximately 250 metres at a time.
A convoy method will be deployed to ensure vehicles are guided through the works at a safe speed while our teams are working in the lane closure area. Temporary lights will control traffic at all other times.
Major delays are not anticipated but road users are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.
Why We Are Doing It
The existing cast iron 6-inch main has become corroded and prone to bursts, impacting on the quality and reliability of supply for customers in the area.
This project will dramatically improve the resilience of the local network and ensure customers continue to enjoy great tasting water from a reliable supply.
Coastal Route
Most of the new water main will be laid along the route of the A78.
Update - November 2024
Work to install a new water main on Shore Road is ongoing however, due to unforeseen circumstances this programme of work is now expected to be completed in December 2024.
There will be roadworks on Shore Road including the use of temporary traffic lights, which will be manned between the hours of 7 AM to 7 PM.
Directional signage will be in place at access points requesting road users follow the flow of traffic.
A dedicated customer care agent will be present on site to assist with any enquiries from residents.
